CHOREOMANIA
“Something's coming, so out of breath
I just kept spinning and I danced myself to death” - Florence + the Machine, Choreomania
Who figured there could be so much beauty in dancing?
“CHOREOMANIA” is a pop-up group art/photo exhibit centered around the beauty and community of dance. Through four different photographers/artists - dance is shown as an intimate space of community, language, and release.
Photographer/artist Cousin Tito invites you to see the world through his lens and for the first time in a long time, through the paintbrush. Translating image into visual art, Tito pulls from a collection of dance experiences he captured in New York City - SoulSummit, the International African Art Festival, and DanceIsLife social dance party. Tito combines influences of popular Black figurative painters like Amy Sherald and Barkley Hendricks, and melds them with his own unique approach to Black story in motion.
Joy Ugiagbe’s photography brings us behind the scenes of a Black ballerina performance. Raised in the Bronx, NYC - now based in Baltimore, Maryland - Ugiagbe shows us the delicate, personal moments before a group of Black ballerinas take the stage.
Baltimore-based photographer Sydney J. Allen captures VERSION, a queer dance party in Baltimore, Maryland created by DJ Trillnatured and hosted by MC Kotic Couture. As resident photographer of the space, Allen shows us how the space is a haven for queer folk with attendees “walking the runway”.
Brooklyn-based photographer Dvzie uses his documentarian perspective to take us to his college days in a dynamic diptych depicting a pair of gentlemen dancing at a residence hall event. Taken at Morgan State University, this duo of photos is just a small pocket of intimate life Dvzie has captured of young Black college students showing us a visual diary of sorts. “I capture life I witness. The life I see…My practice is about documenting where I am in time.”
Multidisciplinary artist Raymond Pinto will be showcasing a performance piece.
Musicians Indapond, Wanya, and BVLL are supporting the event.
